Spencer “Rhodes” Coffey, Jr., recipient of the 2006 Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship Award, radiates brilliance and triumph on and off the field. A high school senior at Dallas’ Science and Engineering Magnet School, Coffey demonstrates success as an athlete and a student, ranking first in his class academically as well as leading his teammates in baseball, golf and tennis.

A natural leader, Coffey credits his experience in athletics for building the foundation that has set him on a path of distinction in other endeavors, including his academic achievement and a desire to serve the community.

His devotion to his studies earned him entrance to the National Society of High School Scholars and the National Honor Society, for which he serves as the community service chairperson. Coffey has volunteered for many community projects, including mission trips to Mission and San Marcos, Texas, where he worked on rebuilding and painting houses. He also participated locally as a volunteer for Amigos Days and helped renovate low-income housing. Other community service projects include his work with a summer reading program, the Dallas Women’s Museum and the Children’s Rights exhibit.

Coffey completed an internship through NASA’s Aerospace Scholars program during his junior year and will graduate from high school in May. He hopes to attend Rice University in Houston, Texas.
