The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Trophy

Troy Smith was the most highly recognized quarterback in college football in 2006, winning the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award®, the Walter Camp Player of the Year and the 7th Heisman
Memorial Trophy Award in Ohio State’s history. He was a first-team All-America selection by the American Football Coaches Association, the Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation. In addition, Smith earned the honor of Sporting News Player of the Year and was voted by his teammates as the Buckeyes’ 2006 Most ValuaVince Youngble Player. He was named the Big Ten’s offensive player of the year, winning Big Ten player-of-the-week honors five times, and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors. Smith also was a finalist for the Maxwell and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Awards.

In 2006, this dynamic leader captained Ohio State to an undefeated 12-0 season and earned a birth
in the BCS National Championship Game. Smith boasts a 25-2 record as the Buckeyes starting
quarterback, including a 10-1 mark against ranked teams and a 3-0 ledger against Michigan.
During his senior year Smith completed 199 of 297 passes for 2,507 yards and threw for a school-
record 30 touchdowns. He was intercepted just five times; three of those were deflections. Smith also rushed for 233 yards and a touchdown, and his 54 career touchdown passes is only three shy of the school record.

The All-America sign caller leads the Big Ten in passing efficiency (167.8) and touchdown passes (54). Smith ranked sixth in Ohio State’s history with 5,685 passing yards. He completed 416 of his 656 attempts and has 6,868 yards of total offense, which is third in school history. He topped the 300-yard mark six times in total offense, tying the school record, and threw for 300 yards or more three times in his career.

As quarterback for Ohio State, Smith threw a career-high four touchdown passes against Iowa, Indiana, Michigan and Northwestern and topped 200 yards passing in half of the team’s 12 games. He also

became the first Ohio State quarterback since Tippy Dye (1934-36) to lead the Buckeyes to three
consecutive wins over Michigan.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Smith graduated in the spring of 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in
communication.
